Glass factory temporarily shut after weekend incident

An Upper Austrian glass manufactory had to be closed down temporarily after several litres of liquid glass escaped a defunct oven last night (Sun/Mon).

Braunau officials said today the incident kept 120 firemen of the local brigade busy for several hours. They stressed the mission was a risky and complex one due to potentially dangerous fumes and massive steam.

A spokesman for the fire brigade said it was still a matter of investigation why the oven let the 1,500-degree-centigrade liquid glass leak.

This is the fifth incident of its kind at the firm which has now been temporarily shut for examination and repair work. Around 150 staff are affected.
