Bike thief nabbed after cross-country chase
Police have arrested a Slovakian cycle thief after pursuing him across three countries last night (Tues/Weds).
Officials in the province of Burgenland said police in Kittsee signalled the man to stop as they carried out random traffic checks at the border. But instead, he floored the van’s gas pedal and sped off.
Police gave chase, following the man into Slovakia and then Hungary as the 45-year-old hurtled across the border. He was eventually caught after exiting his car when he got stuck on a rural path.
The man admitted to stealing the five pricey bicycles officers discovered in his van in Vienna on Monday. Slovakian police put him in custody, while their Austrian colleagues have started looking for the bikes’ owners.
