Heavy thunderstorms in Upper Austria and Styria

Heavy thunderstorms flooded cellars and caused mudslides in Upper Austria and Styria on Sunday night.

In Upper Austria alone, the fire brigades had to respond almost 300 times. Their main task was to pump water out of flooded cellars and free cars that had been hit by mudslides.

According to the newspaper "Heute", nobody was injured.

In parts of the town of Altaussee in the district of Liezen, Styria, the water was up to half a metre high. "Heute" estimated the damage to be several 100,000 Euros.

Curiously only three kilometers from Altaussee it remained dry. The train between Ebensee in the Gmunden district in Upper Austria and Bad Aussee in the district of Liezen, Styria, had to be cancelled.

On the Koppental road in the direction of Obertraun, Gmunden district, Upper Austria, four vehicles were trapped by a one and a half metre high mudslide and it took the fire brigade two hours to free them.

In Carinthia, several trees were uprooted by the thunderstorms and flooding occurred in several places. One worker was struck by lightning and in the district of Grieskirchen, Upper Austria, lightning set a silo on fire.

The biogases that were stored in the silo caused a giant fireball.

Meanwhile the situation has calmed down but further thunderstorms have to be reckoned with in the affected regions today (Mon).
