German hooligans hospitalise pub-goers

German football hooligans face charges after attacking pub-goers in Carinthia last night (Mon).

Police in the town of Tröpolach said today the six 1. FC Köln (Cologne) supporters hurled beer glasses, tables and chairs at locals. Witnesses said the attack occurred without an apparent reason. Four people had to be hospitalised in Villach.

Officials said a chief librarian is among the attackers who now face violence charges.

This incident follows brutal rows involving fans of the German Bundesliga team – who are in Hermagor for a pre-season training camp until tomorrow – in discos and bars in other towns in the province on the weekend.

Around 150 supporters are currently in the province with their favourite team. Local police stressed that only a small number in the group were responsible for the violent incidents.

The side coached by former VfB Stuttgart captain Zvonimir Soldo lost a friendly against French club RC Lens 1-2 in Villach yesterday. The match was overshadowed by on-pitch rows between players – which followed 1. FC Köln players clashing with players of Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal in a goalless test match in Hermagor last Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Premier League giants Arsenal – who are currently preparing in Bad Waltersdorf, Styria – are set to play Austrian third-league side SC Neusiedl in Neusiedl, Burgenland, tonight (kickoff: 7pm).
