Flying tarmac chunks hit couple as truck rams sidewalk
An elderly couple was injured by tarmac flying through the air after the tyre of a passing lorry burst yesterday (Weds).
Police in Vienna said today the pair – a 70-year-old woman and her husband four years her senior – were going for a walk in the Döbling district when a truck's front tyre blew out after it touched a pavement edge as it went round a bent.
Fragments of asphalt were hurled through the air in the incident, with some of the pieces hitting the old-age couple.
Doctors at a local clinic said the pensioners only suffered minor injuries. They will be discharged later today or tomorrow, they added.
Meanwhile, a drunk Romanian articulated lorry driver is facing charges for getting stuck in a low underpass in Pöchlarn, Lower Austria, on Tuesday. The 44-year-old man was found to be almost five times over the drink drive limit.
