Mosquito plague over in four days
The mosquito plague will be over in four days, an expert has announced.
Zoologist and mosquito expert Bernhard Seidel said to the Austrian newspaper "Heute": "The worst is behind us."
After the heavy rains that fell in May and June, mosquitoes became a real plague. The aggressive "flood generation" of mosquitoes will die however before the coming weekend.
A single female mosquito is able to lay 300 eggs after just one sting. And since so much water had gathered everywhere, the mosquitoes were not confined to the marshes but were able to venture into the inner cities in high numbers.
At the worst point of the plague, at the end of June, as much as 1,000 mosquitoes came on one single inhabitant.
There is no hundred per cent protection from mosquitoes yet. Seidel warned from using chemical substances saying: "What harms the mosquitoes harms humans as well. What helps is to show as little skin as possible and to wear loose, light clothes."
According to "Heute" it is also advisable to refrain from using deodorants or other smells because they attract rather than repel mosquitoes. Water should be emptied out from flower pots and rain barrels should be covered.
