Carinthian angler catches piranha

A fisherman has caught a piranha at a Carinthian nature resort, it has been reported.

Carinthian media say today (Weds) Gerhard Kurath from Leibsdorf near the provincial capital Klagenfurt hooked the infamously dangerous South American fish at waters in the Drau (Drava) meadows.

"At first I thought I had caught a percidae. But I could not believe my eyes when I saw that it really was a piranha," the passionate angler said.

Eduard Blatnik, head of the Carinthian Anglers Association, said the fish had most likely been abandoned by a non-expert who did not know how to look after it properly.

"It would not have survived water temperatures in autumn and winter," he added.

Another fisher caught a piranha in the Drau River across the border just a few days earlier.
