Rare donkey born at Schönbrunn Zoo
An endangered species of donkey has given birth to a son at Vienna’s Schönbrunn Zoo.
Proud Poitou donkey mum Orelia gave birth to little Richelieu last Friday - making him the latest edition to the rare Poitou donkey population of which there is only 180 worldwide.
Carers said they named him Richelieu because the species derives from 11th century France where they were used for farm work for decades.
Schönbrunn Zoo officials said they were engaged in protecting the rare species.
The zoo hit the news last week when visitors assumed its South American Seriema birds have collapsed in the sweltering heat.
Carers however explained the species enjoyed lying motionless on the ground and spreading out their wings to enjoy the sunshine for some time.
Schönbrunn Zoo is the world’s oldest zoo and one of Vienna’s most popular attractions.
