Test match victory premiere for 'Bulls'

Champions Red Bull Salzburg celebrated the first pre-season friendly match victory of this summer yesterday (Weds).

The team of Huub Stevens beat Greek top-flight club Aris Thessaloniki FC. Former Rapid Vienna striker Roman Wallner scored the only goal of the match which took place in Grassau in the German state of Bavaria.

The "Bulls" will play Faroe Islands side HB Tórshavn in the second UEFA Champions League qualification round later this month.

Vice champions Austria Vienna defeated Dinamo Bucharest. Manuel Ortlechner, Roland Linz, Andreas Tiffner and Zlatko Junuzovic found the net for the team managed by Karl Daxbacher in the 4-3 thriller in Leogang, Salzburg.

Rapid Vienna, who finished the season in third, beat third-league club Waidhofen an der Ybbs 2-0. Former Altach star Mario Konrad and national team ace Christopher Trimmel netted for the "Green-Whites".

ÖFB Cup winners Sturm Graz meanwhile failed to please their fans as they lost against Czech side FC Baník Ostrava (0-1) and Russian club FC Sibir Novosibirsk (1-2).

SV Mattersburg crushed second-league club TSV Hartberg 4-0, while Austrian Bundesliga rivals Magna Wiener Neustadt lost against second-league side St. Pölten 1-2.

SV Ried held Videoton FC from Hungary to a goalless draw.

Good and bad news meanwhile come from Austrian players engaged in Germany.

Champions Bayern Munich said Austrian national team star David Alaba extended his contract for three more years. The 18-year-old became Austria’s youngest national team player of all time last year. Alaba joined the side coached by Louis van Gaal from Austria Vienna two years ago.

Christian Fuchs’ chances to play for a top German Bundesliga team are meanwhile diminishing. Sports press report that no potentially interested club wanted to transfer 1.5 million Euros to VfL Bochum, who were relegated into the second league last season, to procure the defender’s services.

Asked to comment reports that Fuchs hoped to join VfB Stuttgart of Hamburger SV, VfL Bochum manager Friedhelm Funkel fumed: "The official squad pictures will be taken on Sunday. I expect Christian to turn up."
