Hoffer joins German 'Red Devils'

Former Rapid Vienna star Erwin Hoffer has joined 1. FC Kaiserslautern, it has emerged.

Stefan Kuntz, board chief of the German club – which managed promotion into the German Bundesliga – said today (Fri) the 23-year-old will join them on a one year loan from Italian Seria A side SSC Napoli.

Hoffer was transferred from Rapid to SSC Napoli for an alleged five million Euros last summer. The national team player was however given little match time after coach Roberto Donadoni – who signed Hoffer – was sacked just a few weeks into the season.

Hoffer said he was relieved and happy about the developments.

"Kaiserslautern is a great club with fantastic fans and an impressive stadium. I’m looking forward to this new challenge. I will give it my best and hope to find my form again," he said.

Hoffer scored 23 goals for Rapid in the 2008/2009 season. He was part of the Austrian squad at the Euro2008.

Kaiserslautern coach Marco Kurz hopes Hoffer will compensate for the departure of Slovak star Erik Jendrisek and German Under-21s striker Sidney Sam. Jendrisek decided to leave the "Red Devils" and join vice champions Schalke 04, while Sam was sold to Bayer Leverkusen.

Hoffer will be teammate of former Admira keeper Marco Knaller at Kaiserslautern.

Austrian Bundesliga club LASK Linz meanwhile announced Rene Aufhauser has been elected new captain of the team. The midfielder succeeds Georg Margreitter who joined vice champions Austria Vienna.

"I feel honoured and I’m happy about the great amount of trust the team and the manager put in me," Aufhauser – who played for GAK and Red Bull Salzburg before joining LASK – said.

The 2010/2011 season of the Austrian Bundesliga kicks off in two weeks.
