Ortlieb named new VSV boss

Ski legend Patrick Ortlieb has been named new president of the Austrian Skiing Federation’s (ÖSV) Vorarlberg department (VSV).

VSV officials announced today (Fri) the body’s board elected the 43-year-old retired downhill ace in a meeting last night.

Ortlieb – who runs the Hotel Montana at the exclusive ski resort of Lech am Arlberg – succeeds Rolf Amann. The 70-year-old headed the VSV for 14 years.

Ortlieb won the 1992 Olympic downhill race of Albertville, France before skiing to gold in the same discipline at the 1996 World Championships in Sierra Nevada, Spain, four years later.

The Bregenz-born skier became a member of the federal parliament for the Freedom Party (FPÖ) after the right-wing overtook the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) in the 1999 general elections to become the second-strongest political force in the country.

Ortlieb however failed to make an impact in his three-year term as MP.
