'Bulls' march on despite bellyflop
Austrian champions Red Bull Salzburg embarrassed themselves by losing to Faroe Islands team HB Tórshavn 0-1 yesterday (Tues).
The star-studded team of Dutchman Huub Stevens nevertheless progress into the third UEFA Champions League qualification round thanks to their 5-0 win in the first leg last week.
Stevens said after yesterday’s match, which took place in the Faroe Islands capital Tórshavn in front of just 250 fans: "It’s hard to find words after such a performance. I have to take part of the blame by resting a few experienced players to give younger ones their chance."
Salzburg, who only reached a goalless draw against Kapfenberg in the first round of the 2010/2011 Bundesliga season on the weekend, are set to clash with AC Omonia next week.
The three-time Austrian league winners would need to take another hurdle after beating the Cypriot champs to make it into the main stage of the prestigious Champions League for the first time in the club’s history.
Rapid Vienna will try to win back some fans disgruntled by their 0-4 loss against Wacker Innsbruck in the league on Sunday when they play Lithuanian side FK Sūduva Marijampolė in the return leg of the second qualifying round of the upcoming UEFA Europa League tomorrow. Rapid won last week’s first leg 2-0 away from home.
Archrivals Austria Vienna travel to Bosnia-Herzegovina to play NK Široki Brijeg. Last Thursday’s first leg ended 2-2. The Austrian vice champions’ start into the new Bundesliga season was significantly better as they beat SV Mattersburg 2-0.
Meanwhile, Austrian national team striker Marko Arnautovic caused good news at his new club Werder Bremen. The former Inter star, 21, scored one goal in the German Bundesliga club’s 3-1 win over amateur side SSV Reutlingen yesterday.
