SC Neusiedl go down heads held high against Arsenal
Burgenland side SC Neusiedl fought a courageous battle against Premier League giants Arsenal yesterday (Tues).
The third-league club lost 0-3 to Arsene Wenger’s team in front of more than 4,000 fans at the local ground. Between 300 and 1,300 supporters usually turn up for league matches of the home side.
England star Theo Walcott scored the opener before 18-year-old Emmanuel Thomas found the net. Marouane Chamakh, who joined the "Gunners" from French champions FC Girondins de Bordeaux on a free transfer, stroked home a penalty to make it 3-0, and Mexican Carlos Vela scored the final goal of the friendly.
Italian keeper Vito Mannone saved SC Neusiedl star Juraj Skrpic’s attempt from the penalty spot.
Arsenal left Austria immediately after the match as they are due to play Italian club AC Milan in the Emirates Cup on Saturday before meeting Scottish side Celtic Glasgow 24 hours later.
The London club had held a one and a half week training camp in the Styrian spa resort Bad Waltersdorf for a ninth year in a row.
SK Austria Klagenfurt play Italian club US Palermo at the Hypo Group Arena in Klagenfurt tonight (6pm). Entry is free of charge, club bosses say.
German Bundesliga club Mainz 05 beat Greek league champions Panathinaikos FC 2-0 in a friendly in Mittersill, Salzburg, on Monday. Austrians Andreas Ivanschitz and Christian Fuchs were part of a winning team managed by Thomas Tuchel.
Dozens of top-flight clubs from all over Europe have again chosen Austria as the place to get in shape for the upcoming season this summer.
